New Zealanders spend more than 80% of our lives inside buildings and buildings are often the largest type of asset owned by both ordinary people and wealthy investors. The Built Environment group delivers programs on how buildings are designed, constructed and perform. The construction program includes Quantity Surveying, Facilities management and Construction management. Quantity Survey is the costing and feasibility analysis of buildings during the design and construction of buildings. Construction management is the efficient use of people and resources during construction and includes safety and waste reduction. Facilities management is the safe and efficient use of energy and resources to create productive and efficient buildings. The group also teaches papers on how buildings are constructed and perform for Valuers and property managers and investors.
Scholarships are available for specific topics related to the building and construction sector.
We are regularly asked about the availability of these scholarships to overseas students pursuing courses in NZ. Our Board expects that the Building Research Levy funds which are applied in this scholarships scheme will benefit New Zealand, and it is easier to make that case if there is a reasonable likelihood that once graduated the person will seek to stay in NZ and work in the NZ industry.
We are comfortable with offering scholarships to high-performing overseas students if the topic is manifestly extremely beneficial for the NZ building and construction sector to understand better – and the two topics listed below fall in this category – and the academic supervisor has confidence that the person will be able to properly understand the nuances of their interactions with the NZ sector.
However, if we have competing proposals, this concept of there being ongoing benefit to the NZ sector from the skills of the recipient (which will be at our sole discretionary assessment) will be used as an important criterion in the decision on how we allocate the available funds.
Bachelor of Construction.
Having come from a hospitality background into the Bachelor of Construction at Massey Engineering, Charlene Colas is tackling a whole new set of skills. She says the Bachelor of Construction degree is like assembling pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and locking them all together.
“The law papers have taught me every answer is a good one if you have a good argument, while the finance and economics papers can help me in both my personal and professional life. I’m learning all there is to know about building and engineering!”
Charlene’s love of architecture, design and landscaping have helped guide her to the Bachelor of Construction degree. She hopes to be a Quantity Surveyor and perhaps open her own practice one day. Of particular interest to Charlene is new building innovation and the new green building ethic, where construction is measured around sustainability principles, low energy ratings and sustainable design.
Charlene lives in Albany with her young daughter Gabrielle. Her father is a mechanical engineer by trade and now a property developer. She says the homes he has built are some of the most beautiful she has seen.
Coupled with her curiosity about construction to drive her forward, are her leisure pursuits and how they fit with her new career choice.
“I really enjoy the outdoor life, travelling and spending time with my friends and family.”
A career as a quantity surveyor will allow Charlene to indulge her passions and enjoy working in the construction industry anywhere in the world.
